After rumblings for quite some time, Marvel has finally confirmed that its Venom film is indeed in the works, with Tom Hardy set to play the beloved Spider-Man anti-hero.
As Deadline reports, the comic giant made the reveal today (May 19), confirming its casting choice and announcing that Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) will direct the film. It's set to start filming this fall and arrive on October 5, 2018, via Sony.
Marvel said Venom is not a spinoff picture but the first after Spider-Man from its Marvel Universe of characters.
Venom was first introduced in 1988 in The Amazing Spider-Man, which was scripted by David Michelinie and drawn by the legendary Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. Venom is a alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive and has appeared alongside the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Deadpool, Hulk and more Marvel characters over the years.
Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing Venom, along with Amy Pascal.
