The cast and creative minds of The X-Files have just reunited to recreate the show's iconic theme song. And they've added lyrics.
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have joined forces with their X-Files family to record a new version of the show's theme, which now features fan-written lyrics. It's wild, to say the least, and you can hear the results for yourself below via a newly assembled video.
The idea came from X-Files executive producer Frank Spotnitz, who wanted to help those in need during these troubling times. So his idea was to ask X-Files fans to write lyrics for the show's instrumental theme, with Duchovny, Anderson and a whole lot more then performing the winning tune, which comes with lyrics by Jennifer Large and Rebecca McDonald, Variety reports.
As you will see in the video below, "Song in the Key of X" features a ton of familiar faces. In addition to Duchovny and Anderson, we see the likes of Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), Robert Patrick (John Doggett), Annabeth Gish (Monica Reyes), James Pickens Jr. (Alvin Kersh), Laurie Holden (Marita Covarrubias), William B. Davis (Cigarette-Smoking Man), Nicholas Lea (Alex Krycek) and Cary Elwes (Brad Follmer).
There's also several creatives in there, including X-Files creator Chris Carter, as well as executive producer-writer Vince Gilligan, composer Mark Snow, director Michelle MacLaren and others.
The lyric-driven "Song in the Key of X" will benefit the World Central Kitchen charity.
In a statement, Carter said, "We wanted to gather The X-Files family together during these trying times to put some hope and spirit back into the world. And use the occasion to give thanks and donations to those who need it most."
Spotnitz added:
During lockdown I really wanted to find a way to do something positive, and we had a rare opportunity to get The X-Files gang back together, so we hit upon this idea of putting lyrics to the theme tune — which had never been done before. It has been quite an amazing and amusing ride to put together this complex project and we're honored that so many of our wonderful cast members and team have taken part.
It's been a real joy to reunite virtually with our friends and former colleagues, and we hope not only to bring a smile to many people, but also to help a worthwhile cause.
