The Safdie Brothers Might Make a Dark Pee-wee Herman Movie

Paul Rust recently brought Pee-wee Herman back for a big Netflix movie, but while the project was plenty zany, it was certainly lacking in gravitas. That might not be the case for Pee-wee's next adventure, however, as the beloved children's character might be making a flick with none other than Uncut Gems directors Josh and Benny Safdie.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pee-wee mastermind Paul Reubens explained he's been trying to get a darker movie from his character off the ground for years.

"I've referred to it as the Valley of the Dolls Pee-wee movie," Reubens said. "It's about fame."

In the film, Pee-wee reportedly emerges from prison to become a famous yodeller, who then pivots into movie-making. Unfortunately, drug and alcohol addiction turn him into the character.

Reubens has reportedly spoken with the Safdies about helming the project. According to THR, the brothers are apparently considering the film.

That said, there's no shortage of demand for Safdie material right now given the wide success of Uncut Gems, so their dark, drug-addled Pee-wee movie may only ever exist in our dreams.
