The Lee Cronin-directed 'Evil Dead Rise' will be executive produced by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell

It's been nearly a year since we last heard about the long-awaited new Evil Dead film, but the project didn't die altogether. Instead, some new details have emerged today.

The film was previously titled Evil Dead Now, but the name has been changed to Evil Dead Rise. As previously reported, it will be directed by Lee Cronin (who helmed the A24 cult horror flick The Hole in the Ground) and executive produced by previous franchise director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell.

Though he's working behind the scenes, Campbell will not appear onscreen in the new film. Further, it's unclear at this point if the film will arrive in theatres. Instead, Evil Dead Rise will debut on HBO Max in the United States and on other streaming services worldwide.

Though Evil Dead was rebooted in 2013, this film will ignore that version and will instead build off of the original trilogy. Further, the action will now take place in a city.

The film stars Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan as a pair of estranged sisters who reunite, only to face off against flesh-possessing demons.

"At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations," Campbell said in a statement. "I can't wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition."

Cronin added: "The Evil Dead movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at 9 years old. I am excited and humbled to be resurrecting the most iconic of evil forces for both the fans and a whole new generation."

Evil Dead Rise does not have a release date just yet, but it will begin shooting in New Zealand next month.
