Despite no one actually inviting him, the (maybe) newly betrothed Mr. Phoebe Bridgers, a.k.a. Paul Mescal, has shared that he has no intention to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Falling subtly into the camp of Team Cinema — in contrast with Danai Gurira, who quite recently spoke to Black Panther director-writer Ryan Coogler's "deeply cinematic" sensibilities — Mescal revealed in conversation with GQ UK that he aspires to "do somethin' a little bit shinier" with a future project — the Normal People actor just doesn't feel like doing superhero movies.
He said, "This will be something that I regret saying, but at the moment it's not something… It's not been asked of me. So I feel kind of like ridiculous saying no when it hasn't been asked, but it's not something that I am pining to do. I don't know if I would have the patience required. And I am deeply envious of people who do have that patience."
However, the actor does appear to be open to persuasion on the matter, telling interviewer Ben Allen that there are "definitely ones out there that I'm like, 'For sure,'" adding that he wouldn't name the desired role lest he "give it the commentators' curse." Given Mescal's indie streak, perhaps he would be open to a quirky remake of RoboCop? Yet another gritty iteration of Watchmen? He could probably pull off that Doctor Manhattan body-con blue suit!
As arbitrary a take as Mescal's may seem, the Marvel question remains near-requisite among Hollywood's brightest these days; nearly everyone from Elizabeth Olsen to Tom Holland has weighed in on whether MCU films are "cinema" over the last few years.
