Netflix's latest original animated series Big Mouth hits the streaming service later this week, but the show has already drawn criticism for one of its casting decisions.
The star-studded roster of voice actors includes creator Nick Kroll, as well as John Mulaney, Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Jessi Klein and Jenny Slate in an adult comedy about the disgusting realities of puberty.
Since the release of the show's official trailer earlier this month, though, Slate's role has been called into question by a couple of Twitter users because the actress voices a black character.
Many others have voiced their concern for the problematic casting decision in the comment section on this Oh No They Didn't post.
It's not the first time Netflix has come under fire for whitewashing characters in their original programming. Earlier this year, The Monkey King (an adaptation of Chinese classic Journey to the West) was accused of casting white actors to play the roles of Asian characters.
Big Mouth arrives on Netflix this Friday (September 29). John Mulaney spoke to Exclaim! about the new cartoon earlier this year. "It's such a funny group of writers and it's a jaw-dropping look at puberty, but also very warm and funny," he said. "It's geared to how emotional and filthy you are when you were 13."
