Last month, we caught wind of a rumour that Netflix was planning to launch a production hub in Toronto. Now, the streaming giant has confirmed its plans.
Netflix confirmed that it is leasing four new sound stages, as well as office spaces, for a total of 164,000 square feet of real estate along the downtown industrial waterfront of Toronto. In addition, Netflix is leasing four sound stages at Pinewood Toronto Studios at around 84,580 square feet.
The leases are "multi-year," though the timeframe is unclear. That said, Netflix is expecting to provide up to 1,850 Canadian jobs per year.
"I've been excited from day one about the interest Netflix has shown in establishing a much bigger presence in Toronto," Toronto Mayor John Tory said in a statement. "Great crews, great studio space, great customer service and great companies like Netflix make Toronto the best place in North America to make television shows and movies."
Stay tuned for more details as they develop.
