A 39-year-old Brooklyn man has pleaded guilty to his involvement in the accidental death of Michael K. Williams.
The actor died at 54 of what was later revealed to be an accidental overdose. Now, drug dealer Irvin Cartagena has now pleaded guilty to narcotics conspiracy for selling Williams the fentanyl-laced heroin that led to his death.
Cartagena entered the plea to a charge of conspiring to distribute drugs in a Manhattan federal court yesterday (April 5), signing an agreement on the prosecutors' stipulation that the mix of fentanyl and heroin he sold Williams had resulted in his death.
Williams, who starred in The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Lovecraft Country and 12 Years a Slave, was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment on September 6, 2021. Surveillance footage showed him completing a hand-to-hand sale with Cartagena and three additional suspects the day before — all four having been arrested and charged in connection with Williams's death early last year.
US District Judge Ronnie Abrams is set to sentence Cartagena on August 18. He'll face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, and could serve as many as 40.
