Michael K. Williams — star of The Wire, Boardwalk EmpireLovecraft County and more — passed away last September of an accidental overdose, and arrests have now been made in connection to his death.

As The New York Post reports, federal authorities arrested and charged four men with narcotics conspiracy for distributing fentanyl-laced heroin that led to Williams' death.

Authorities say the four suspects were members of a drug trafficking crew operating in the Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn, and sold Williams cocaine that was laced with fentanyl. Investigators say surveillance footage shows the suspects completing a hand-to-hand sale with Williams the day before he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment (September 6).

Authorities said the four men continued selling drugs at residential buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan in the aftermath of Williams' death.

"This is a public health crisis," Damian Williams, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement. "And it has to stop. Deadly opioids like fentanyl and heroin don't care about who you are or what you've accomplished."

Williams' death was previously ruled an accidental overdose by New York City's Chief Medical Examiner. The actor reportedly ingested a lethal mixture of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and p-flurofentanyl. Prior to his passing, Williams had openly discussed his own experience and challenges with addiction.
