Days after Johnny Depp exited from his role in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, Mads Mikkelsen has emerged as a potential replacement.

Deadline reports that Mikkelsen is director David Yates' first choice to take Depp's role as wizard Grindelwald, and is in early talks to fill the position. It was previously revealed that Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and that the film will debut in the summer of 2022.

Last week, Depp shared that he was asked by Warner Bros. to resign following a court case concerning his marriage to Amber Heard, in which British newspaper The Sun alleged him to be a "wife beater." Depp tried to sue The Sun for libel and lost the case.

Fantastic Beasts 3 will follow the franchise's second instalment, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which arrived in 2018.
