Danny Boyle's 2000 Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach may soon be getting a new lease on life — but this time as a TV series.
Boyle broke the news during a recent interview with The Independent, revealing filmmaker and actress Amy Seimetz has begun working on a prequel of the story, which first emerged as a book by Ex Machina filmmaker Alex Garland.
"The Beach may come back," Boyle said. "[Seimetz] has taken The Beach and made a prequel for television. It's the same character but it's set now, so 20 years later — it's a bit of a headfuck."
In other words, it's a prequel but set now, with the character DiCaprio played still serving as the main character.
Boyle added, "It's intriguing when you see it. I've read the first two scripts."
To refresh your memory, the film/book told the tale of an American traveller — played by DiCaprio in the film — who seeks out paradise on a hidden beach in Thailand. Of course, it doesn't remain a paradise for long — both in the story and real life.
For the unfamiliar, Seimetz has landed acting roles in the recent Pet Sematary, Lean on Pete and Stranger Things, as well as directed episodes of Atlanta. She is also executive producing, writing and directing The Girlfriend Experience.
Of course, this is hardly the only upcoming Boyle-related project. Just the other day, we learned a new 28 Days Later sequel was in the works.
