Legendary Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble and Hairspray director John Waters is set to return to the world of film this year with an adaptation of his 2022 novel Liarmouth. It’ll be his first feature film in 20 years, and it’s set to star none other than Aubrey Plaza.

Subtitled a “Feel-Bad Romance,” Liarmouth is described as a “hilariously filthy tale of sex, crime and family dysfunction.” Waters’s book centres on a scamming, compulsive liar named Marsha Sprinkle who splits from her partner Daryl and steals from both her daughter and her mother.

The project was first announced in 2022 but was delayed by the writers’ and actors’ strikes. With Plaza set to star as Sprinkle, the film will begin shooting later this year in Baltimore, MD, Waters’s home city.

Waters’s last film was 2004’s A Dirty Shame, which starred Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville and Selma Blair
