Homer Doesn't Choke Bart on 'The Simpsons' Anymore

The long-running gag hasn't been touched in four seasons

They've done it again: The Simpsons has predicted that abusing your kid doesn't age well. As such, Homer Simpson has alluded to the fact that he doesn't strangle Bart anymore in the show's latest episode.

Even those of us who seldom venture past Season 10 could tell you that Homer exclaiming "Why you little!" and wrapping his hands around his son's throat is one of the bits the show has recycled into oblivion. Now, TV's most famous dysfunctional father has declared even he is above child abuse — proving creator Matt Groening wasn't bluffing when he said he was nervous about cancel culture

The revelation was made in the fifth episode of the show's 35th season after a neighbour mentions Homer's firm handshake. "See Marge, strangling the boy paid off," before adding, "Just kidding, I don't do that anymore. Times have changed!"

Of course, people are as mad about this as they were at the phasing out of Apu, but what's interesting is that Homer hasn't actually strangled Bart since Season 31. The only difference now is that the show is pointing it out in one of their subtle fourth-wall-breaking addresses to the audience.

Seriously, the end of a long-running gag is the least of The Simpsons's worries if its writers thought it was what's keeping the show from being any good. And to anyone who actually cares that much about this, way to let everyone know you still watch new episodes of a show that has squandered its own legacy like no other.
