Joaquin Phoenix is the latest Hollywood star to step into the role of Batman's nemesis the Joker in an upcoming Todd Phillips-directed origin film, and the first look at him in character has now arrived.
The director shared a photo of Phoenix as the Joker via Instagram, but it doesn't show the iconic Batman villain in his usual kooky colourful suit and clown make-up. Rather, it depicts Phoenix simply as "Arthur," and sees the actor donning longer-than-usual hair and wearing a relatively reserved green jacket.
Aptly titled Joker, the film is expected to take a more experimental approach than previous DC blockbuster offerings. It's described as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale."
Phillips co-wrote the film with Scott Silver (The Fighter, 8 Mile). In addition to Phoenix as the title character, it also features performances by Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Zazie Beetz.
Joker hits theatres on October 4, 2019.
