The last time Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey teamed up for a detective thriller, the result was Seven. Three Academy Awards later, the pair settle for Edison, with Justin Timberlake instead of Brad Pitt, and a first time writer-director that seems to have little regard for coherent filmmaking. Set in the fictional town of, well, Edison, the film doles out a cookie-cutter plot involving a feisty journalist (Timberlake, trying very hard) on the case of some corrupt cops (Dylan McDermott, L.L. Cool J). Spacey and Freeman phone in their roles as his mentors and should hope that the Academy doesnt demand their Oscars back. Edison could pass as mindless entertainment in desperate times, but so could a Justin Timberlake video, and you can watch that for free on television.
