Based on Phoebe Gloeckner's novel, the film follows a young girl named Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) who experiences a sexual awakening when she starts sleeping with Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgård), boyfriend of her mother (Kristen Wiig). All of this takes place in 1970s San Francisco.
