Following the semi-success of The Many Saints of Newark — which received middling reviews and pretty much bombed at the box office, it was also a streaming success that inspired a jump in Sopranos viewership — it looks like David Chase might be expanding the beloved show's lore even further.
Chase recently signed a major five-year deal with Warner Media, which covers film and TV across HBO, HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures Group. And because we've reached peak-Marvel-extended-universification of all media, Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff says they want to use this opportunity to bring the world more Sopranos.
"We're thrilled with the results of Many Saints," Sarnoff told Deadline. "Yes, the box office was not quite as big, but back again to the demographics of who's going to theatres. On the other hand, you see Sopranos pop into the top 10 of the most-viewed series on the service. It's given it an entirely new life."
Sarnoff continued, "We're talking to David about a new series, Sopranos-related, on HBO Max. [Many Saints] literally lifted the Sopranos franchise in a new way, so you can't measure it in and of itself in the box office."
Back in September, Chase had previously told Deadline that he would consider making a sequel film to The Many Saints of Newark, saying, "That would be interesting to do, and there's a lot of stories that exist already because of the mythology, and working with Terry would be great. He and I in that world again, I think we'd have a good time. I wouldn't do it on my own, and I would not do it with anybody else. If Warner wanted it, they own it, they can do whatever they want."
According to Sarnoff's statement, however, it seems like that film sequel may have become a brand new Sopranos TV series. Whatever form it ends up taking, expect more Sopranos in the somewhat near future.
