"I would have held everyone up for a half hour, getting all that prosthetic makeup off"

Where were you on 9/11? Everyone who was old enough to remember knows exactly where they were on that tragic day, but actor Dana Carvey has a particularly memorable story: he observed a moment of silence while in full costume as the Turtle on the set of 2002's The Master of Disguise.

This Turtle-related 9/11 rumour had long been in circulation, so Carvey finally told the full story on his podcast Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade (on the episode with Cecily Strong, published April 5). Spade asked him if it was true, and Carvey confirmed it.

"I was in it [the Turtle Man costume] all of that day, and then they said we're going to have a group prayer about 9/11," Carvey explained. "I would have held everyone up for a half hour, getting all that prosthetic makeup off. So as I remember it, there was all of us, everyone else in civilian clothes, I'm dressed as the Turtle Man with the bald head, and I'm holding hands and lowering my head and praying. I just thought at the moment, 'This is really strange.'"

Spade asked Carvey if he was still wearing the shell, and he responded, "They might have gotten the shell off, but they didn't get the turtle head or the turtle lip off."

It's a strange story that exemplifies the sacrifices we must make for great art. As of this writing, The Master of Disguise has a whopping 1 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
