In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Cineplex temporarily closed all its locations last month. While some theatres were initially planning to reopen this week, the company has announced that its physical locations will remain shut down indefinitely.
A representative from the company told the Canadian Press that Cineplex will await guidance from officials rather than reopening on its own accord.
"Cineplex will continue to take our lead from government and public health authorities, and we will reopen our theatres and entertainment venues across Canada when they tell us it is safe to do so," Cineplex spokeswoman Sarah Van Lange said in a statement.
Cineplex operates 165 movie theatres across Canada, representing 75 percent of the country's theatres.
Last month, the company's executives took an 80 percent pay cut while their employees faced everything from reduced hours to layoffs.
