Actor Carl Weathers has died. He was 76.
"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers," his family said in a statement, noting that he "died peacefully in his sleep" yesterday (February 1).
The statement continued, "Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend."
Weathers was known for his role as Apollo Creed in four Rocky films, as well as prominent parts in Predator, The Mandalorian, Happy Gilmore and many other films and shows. In the 2000s, he had an iconic role as a frugal version of himself in Arrested Development.
Before his acting career, Weathers was a professional football player. He played in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders from 1970 to 1971, then joined the CFL and played for the BC Lions until 1973.
Weathers was married three times. He and his first wife, Marry Ann Castle, had two sons.
