While protests against police brutality and racism rage on in response to the death of George Floyd and countless others, creators of NBC's Brooklyn Nine-Nine have been forced to reckon with the notion of rebuilding the cop-centred comedy series in order to better serve its viewers.
According to series star Terry Crews, showrunner Dan Goor was already four episodes into writing the upcoming eighth season when, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, he scrapped the work to begin again in a new, more meaningful direction.
"We've had a lot of sombre talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we're going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year. We have an opportunity and we plan to use it in the best way possible," Crews revealed in conversation with Access. "Our showrunner Dan Goor, they had four episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash. We have to start over. Right now, we don't know which direction it's going to go in."
He added: "This is an opportunity right now for us all to unite and get together and understand what this is and that we have to battle this together."
The series was renewed for Season 8 back in November last year before airing Season 7. Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been running since 2013 but was briefly cancelled by Fox for a short period of time before being saved by NBC back in 2018.
Crews stars alongside Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero and Joe Lo Truglio, among others.
