Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek has announced plans to publish a new memoir titled The Answer Is…: Reflections on My Life. The book will be released through Simon & Schuster and arrives on July 21.
Amid his ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer, the beloved game show host was compelled to finally share the story of his life and his experience hosting Jeopardy! after receiving an outpouring of support and love from fans during his ongoing mental and physical health struggles.
"I want people to know a little more about the person they have been cheering on for the past year," Trebek said of his new book.
As for its subject matter, the book will, of course, cover Trebek's recent battle with cancer, as well as his marriage to Jean Trebek, his family, spirituality and more.
Read the synopsis below:
The book combines illuminating personal anecdotes with Trebek's thoughts on a range of topics, including marriage, parenthood, education, success, spirituality, and philanthropy. Trebek also addresses the questions he gets asked most often by Jeopardy! fans, such as what prompted him to shave his signature moustache, his insights on legendary players like Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer, and his opinion of Will Ferrell's Saturday Night Live impersonation. The book uses a novel structure inspired by Jeopardy!, with each chapter title in the form of a question, and features dozens of never-before-seen photos that candidly capture Trebek over the years.
"Today, when there is so much uncertainty and turmoil in the world, Alex Trebek is a beacon of stability and positivity," Sean Manning, Simon & Schuster executive director, said in a statement. "This wise, charming and inspiring book is further evidence why he has long been considered one most beloved and respected figures in entertainment."
The 79-year-old television host diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in March 2019. His doctors told him he was "near remission" in May, only for his condition to worsen again in September. Back in November, a contestant on Jeopardy! named Dhruv Gaur used his "Final Jeopardy" response to express his appreciation for the host.
Trebek recently opened up about his struggle with mental health issues through his ongoing cancer battle, confronting his likelihood of survival.
"Because of the cancer diagnosis, it's no longer an open-ended life, it's a closed-ended life because of the terrible...survival rates of pancreatic cancer," Trebek admitted during an ABC special in December.
