The Lord of the Rings saga will continue on the big screen with a new anime feature film.
New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation have announced plans to team up for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim with director Kenji Kamiyama at the helm.
A press release reveals that the standalone War of the Rohirrim "explores and expands the untold story behind the fortress of Helm's Deep," the fortified gorge prominently featured in Peter Jackson's 2002 Lord of the Rings film The Two Towers.
The feature film will delve "into the life and bloodsoaked times of one of Middle-earth's most legendary figures; the mighty King of Rohan – Helm Hammerhand," while also exploring "a legendary battle that helped shape Middle-earth and set the stage for the epic adventures brought to life" in Jackson's film trilogy.
While The War of the Rohirrim will be connected to Jackson's past Middle-earth explorations, it is not related to Amazon's forthcoming Lord of the Rings television series, which is currently in production in New Zealand.
Kamiyama will direct the fast-tracked film from a screenplay written by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, while Joseph Chou will produce. Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for 2003's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, is involved as a consultant.
Jackson's 2001 film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring will celebrate its 20th anniversary this December. The director's six Middle-earth films have grossed over $5.8 billion USD worldwide.
