While Brian Wilson is set to continue his long-running Pet Sounds 50th anniversary tour into 2019, the Beach Boys legend will also look back at his career in a new documentary set to arrive next year.
The yet-to-be-titled film finds Wilson travelling around Los Angeles with Rolling Stone editor Jason Fine, also including footage from live performances and recent studio sessions, both Rolling Stone and Variety report.
The film stems from 90 hours of new interviews that found Wilson reflecting on his life and work, in addition to interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Jim James, Nick Jonas, Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins and more who have been influenced by the Beach Boys legend.
"It felt like a good time to look back," Wilson told Rolling Stone. "I have so many memories in L.A. of growing up, all the good times with my band — we were just kids when we started, and of course memories of my brothers Dennis and Carl, who I miss so much."
He added: "Over the years Jason and I have had a lot of fun times — just relaxing and listening to music, talking at the deli and cruising down to Malibu for sushi, so we got into that groove to make this movie. I hope it shows people the love I feel and the hope I have to share love through my music."
The film is being directed by Brent Wilson (no relation) and produced by Tim Headington. Wilson's manager Jean Sievers will co-produce, while Fine, Brian Wilson and wife Melinda Wilson will executive produce.
"It's definitely not a biographical film. It's not linear in any fashion," Brent Wilson told Rolling Stone. "It's more of an impressionistic film with the music as the driving force that carries it through…I feel like we've got something different here. I've never seen a biopic like this before. I'm hoping it'll be received for what it is, a beautiful, honest portrait of Brian."
