Mike Lawrence is a pop culture junkie. Gracing the Comedy Bar stage wearing an Amazing Spider-Man T-shirt, Lawrence managed to sneak in pop culture nuggets into almost every joke he made during his JFL42 warm-up set in Toronto. From referring to his fiancé as Fiancé Knowles (because he "put a ring on it" and her sister hates him) to dreading his Montreal trip because he worries that he'll be put in a "sharpshooter" (a late '90s wrestling reference) just shows the breadth of his pop culture range. His impression of Dr. Claw singing Iggy Azealia's "Fancy" is spot on.
Lawrence's pop culture savvy is just one of many tools for the New York-based comedian. He can make a joke from anything, whether it's an empty aisle seat in the third row or taking the momentum from the opening comic's closing joke about facials (not the ones you get at the spa), Lawrence's quick wit really added to his set of road-tested jokes, as well as making more than a couple of people regret sitting near the front.
Lawrence admits to some of his jokes falling off the rails during the set, but if he hadn't mentioned it, nobody probably would have noticed.
