While the wait for Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 feels eternal, the final season of the much-loved NBC comedy has now been fitted with a release date — or at least, a very vague and tentative one.
Today NBC announced that Michael Schur's Andy Samberg-led comedy will return for its eighth and final season after the close of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, giving the show what the network calls the "coveted" post-Games slot.
While the Olympics are still facing a very uncertain future in the largely unvaccinated Japan, they are currently still scheduled to run in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8. That means, Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 should arrive in early or mid-August.
"It will launch in August, coming out of the Summer Olympics, which is a coveted slot," Susan Rovner of NBCUniversal Television confirmed today [via Deadline]. "We can think of nothing more deserving than giving it to the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. This is a beloved show and we wanted to give it a slot where it had access to the biggest possible audience."
The network's Frances Berwick added that the whole season will air following the Games. However, if the Tokyo Olympics do not actually happen yet again due to the pandemic — something that's a very real possibility — NBC will come up with a new plan for Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8.
"We're still working out the details but it's safe to assume some of the episodes will be double run," said Berwick.
As previously reported, the show was cancelled then saved by NBC and renewed for Season 8. But then it went on hiatus, as the show tried to retool its episodes so that they were more sensitive in the wake of last year's string of police brutality killings.
