Today (February 8), the music industry is descending upon the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the 57th instalment of the Grammy Awards. As always, many of the biggest starts in the business are on hand, and many of them will be heading home with some new hardware for the mantlepiece.
Notably, Beck won Best Rock Album, Album of the Year and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical) with his 2014 LP Morning Phase, and Beyoncé won Best Surround Sound Album for her self-titled effort plus Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance for her "Drunk in Love" team-up with Jay Z.
Pearl Jam took home Best Recording Package for Lightening Bolt, Aphex Twin came away with Best Dance/Electronic Album for Syro, "Weird Al" Yankovic won Best Comedy Album for Mandatory Fun, and St. Vincent nabbed Best Alternative Music Album with her self-titled LP. Pharrell Williams, meanwhile, scored Best Music Video and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Happy" and Best Urban Contemporary Album for G I R L, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett earned Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Cheek to Cheek, and Jack White won Best Rock Performance for Lazaretto.
Additionally, Jack White also had a hand in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package, which went on Third Man Records' The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, Volume One (1917-27). Also on the rootsy front, the Hank Williams collection The Garden Spot Programs, 1950 won Best Historical Album, and Rosanne Cash won both Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song for "A Feather's Not a Bird," plus Best Americana Album for The River & the Thread.
As for hip-hop, Kendrick Lamar made up for last year's loss by winning Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for "i," while Best Rap/Sung Collaboration went to Eminem and Rihanna for "The Monster." Eminem also took home the award for Best Rap Album for The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
In somewhat head-scratching news, Best Metal Performance went to Tenacious D (sorry, Mastodon and Motörhead), and Paramore beat out the likes of the Black Keys, Jack White and Beck for Best Rock Song.
Sam Smith was one of the night's biggest winners, as he snagged Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Other victors include Ziggy Marley (Best Reggae Album), Angelique Kidjo (Best World Music Album), film composer John Williams (Best Instrumental Composition), Alexandre Desplat (Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Tiesto (Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical, for his John Legend remix).
