After passing away a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday, Betty White's cause of death has now been revealed.
CNN reports that the official cause of death listed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is cerebrovascular accident, the medical term for a stroke. Caused by blood clots and broken blood vessels in the brain, a stroke occurs when blood flow to the organ is limited, damaging brain tissue.
A copy of White's death certificate obtained by TMZ shows the Golden Girls actor suffered the stroke six days before her death. Sources tell the site that White "was alert and coherent after the stroke," and that she "died peacefully in her sleep at home."
White died at her home on December 31. Following her death, agent and friend Jeff Witjas confirmed to Yahoo! Entertainment that the star passed away from natural causes, dismissing claims that her death was related to receiving a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot days prior.
Later this month, White's life and career will be explored in documentary film Betty White: A Celebration, set for release on what would have been her 100th birthday, January 17.
