Folk, psych and disco will collide when Toronto producer ZONES drops the upcoming Recursion - EP. Before the four-track release arrives on October 23 via Several Sounds Resource Centre, project mastermind Derek McKeon has revealed EP cut "Mothlight" and an accompanying video.
"Mothlight" is driven by gurgling synths, slap bass and heavily delayed vocals, and the video has been given a similarly retro treatment, devised by McKeon during quarantine. Fittingly, all of the video effects are analog.
Says McKeon about the video, "Images are reflected into oceans of magnetic molten magma and purple planetary plasma. Inspired by the effects from late '60s video art like Scott Bartlett's OffOn and the animations of Norman McLaren, I built a rig that would reflect and warp anything we put in front of it like water. Video footage was manipulated with vintage analog video gear and fluorescent feedback systems to achieve an electric pathway of purple lightning to the Mothlight magnetosphere."
