Folk singer-songwriter Joey O'Neil released a performance video for her song "Fawning Season" from her latest album Phantom Vibes.
The video, filmed by Toronto-based filmmaker Mitch Fillion, is as gentle and intimate as the track itself, as O'Neil performs in a tranquil, quiet forest, accompanied solely by her guitar and the airy trill of flautist Connor Moe's instrument.
Heavily connected to wildlife and nature, Yukon-based O'Neil says she drew inspiration for the song from a near-tragic encounter with a fawn and a doe on a northern Ontario highway last summer — an event in which O'Neil still feels the impact of today.
"A doe and a fawn ran out in front of my truck, the mother leapt away, the fawn rolled under, and it was probably the most heartbreaking moment of my life," says O'Neil in a press release.
"Most people have an animal with which they relate most and mine has always been a deer," she says.
O'Neil kept in touch with the rehabilitation centre where the injured fawn had been recovering. Upon hearing the baby deer had recovered and connected with the other fawns, the songwriter was moved.
"For a moment I had found a little peace, seeing that he had found a new family. This is when I wrote 'Fawning Season.'"
In addition to sharing the live video, O'Neil has also announced a run of Ontario and Quebec tour dates, including performances in Peterborough, Toronto, Ottawa, Alcove, Waterloo and Montreal starting this weekend.
