Wheat

Hope and Adams

BY Jon BartlettPublished Sep 1, 1999

Wheat follows up their great Medeiros debut with Hope and Adams, another piece of brilliance. Climbing out of the sleepy ballads that inhabited their debut and looking forward instead of behind, Wheat have found a new love in diversity, mixing tempos and sounds like good chefs should. Recording with Dave Fridmann seems to bring out the best in bands, as Mogwai and Elf Power have also recently proved. A few off-balance ideas do find their way in, like the destructive breakdown in “San Diego,” but Wheat have certainly been digging into new bags of tricks. The centrepiece “Who’s The One” can do the convincing on its own, and hopefully Wheat will garner more fans with this highly recommended release.
