As I had decided at the end of last week, I started Week 7 by using Rocksmith 2014's nifty Riff Repeater function to continue playing "Cold Company" by Minus The Bear. I started with the settings on 100% difficulty and 100% speed and I did fine with the first 4 sections of the song. The intro has no rhythm guitar part, which gives you a bit of time to limber up before the song starts, and the following three sections I'd been playing no problem. Section five though was a bit trickier with me missing 19 of 33 notes, so I dropped the speed to 75% then 50% to really hone in on the notes and analyse the fingering.
I went through the song section by section, playing the parts that were easy and identifying the parts that were still giving me problems. I made a note of the sections that I hadn't mastered and tackled them one by one, keeping the difficulty level at 100% but adjusting the speed according to how much I was struggling as official Rocksmith 60 Day Challenge participant Anna Wiesen had suggested to me in Week 6. Generally I could do decently at 75% of the speed but with the tricky, at least for me, fifth section I fell apart when playing at anything over 60% of the speed.
For a couple of weeks now I'd been stuck at 59.7% overall completion on "Cold Company", a figure that was made all the more frustrating given that I had cracked 60% on a much harder song with "War Ensemble" by everyone's favourite Satanists, Slayer. After a week of breaking down the song in this way, I finally cracked that elusive 60% with a 63.7% and at the end of the song the Rocksmith 2014 narrator announced it was an "OK Performance"! Okay? That's the best I've ever done on this song. Sheesh! Some disembodied console game voiceovers are so hard to please!
