We Hunt Buffalo

Head Smashed In

We Hunt Buffalo have entered the kill zone. The guttural guitar of Ryan, the bong-breaking bass of Cliff Thiessen, and the Donkey Kong drums of Brandon Carter have struck the perfect balance on Heads Smashed In, their third album and second on New Damage.

Yet again this intrepid Vancouver power trio has climbed stoner rock mountain, descending with nine freshly cut slabs of testament-worthy hard-psych riffage to grind the doom into fuzz.

Heads Smashed In sees the boys returning to Rain City Recorders with Jesse Gander, who recorded We Hunt Buffalo's 2015 album Living Ghosts. Gander has been behind the console for almost every badass band to come out of Vancouver the past 20 years, from Anciients and Bison B.C. to the Pack A.D. and White Lung.

Their momentum in the studio has continued. The band produced their most sophisticated, cinematic, progressive hard rock, the likes of which Mastodon, Monolord and Electric Wizard fans ought to take note, while the sound has so much snap, it could squeeze crackle and pop off the Rice Krispies box.

There is such definition between the individual instruments and vocals, such clarity in the fuzz. It has all the polish of a stadium metal album, with all the grit of a bar band living in a van.
