After two decades, the NHL Heritage Classic returned to Edmonton — where it had its inaugural game at the Commonwealth Stadium in 2003 — to host the hometown Oilers against the Calgary Flames yesterday (October 29). And naturally, the organizers must have thought to themselves, "How do we make this thing even more Alberta-y?" and came up with the obvious answer: invite Nickelback to perform.

The Hanna, AB-hailing band took the stage during the game's intermission, and no one was more excited about it than Connor McDavid, centre for the winning Oilers. "They're one of the best bands of all time," the hockey player enthused during a post-game interview.

Although it was notably a Sunday, the 'back broke out a cover of Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road hit, "Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting)," which they originally recorded with Kid Rock for the 2003 Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle soundtrack. Their pyro was similarly full-throttle — check out fan-shot footage below.
