Following 2011's artistic step-up Within and Without, Ernest Greene has announced he will be resurrecting his Washed Out project for a new full-length. Titled Paracosm, the record will arrive on all the usual formats on August 13 via Sub Pop, with a UK/European release to drop the day before on Weird World.
The album was produced by previous studio collaborator Ben Allen in Georgia, and according to the press release, we can expect another big shift from Greene, who is embracing the idea of escapism for the new record.
The PR explains, "On Paracosm, the Georgia-based musician explores the album's namesake phenomenon, where people create detailed imaginary worlds. The concept has been used to describe fantasy lands like Tolkien's Middle Earth and C.S. Lewis' Narnia, and it's at the heart of the 2004 documentary In the Realms of the Unreal about outsider artist Henry Darger."
On a sonic level, the album is to still feature Washed Out's usual blend of computers and synths, but he has "made a conscious decision to expand his sonic palette." This apparently led him to employ some 50 different instruments on the album, including a wide variety of vintage keyboards like the Mellotron, Chamberlin, Novatron, and Optigan.
A teaser track has yet to pop up, but we can expect the first single "It All Feels Right" to arrive in due course. For now, you can watch a nature-lined album trailer below, complete with some calm and serene soundscapes.
You can also find Washed Out's brief summer tour schedule below, though it does not feature any Canadian dates.
Tour dates:
8/24 Monterey, CA - First City Festival
8/25 Los Angeles, CA - FYF Fest
8/31 Seattle, WA - Bumbershoot Festival
914 Detroit, MI - Laneway Festival
