Waldeck

Ballroom Stories

BY Romina WendellPublished Sep 19, 2007

Returning to the heyday of tango and swing, Waldeck’s third album does its title justice, as well as marking a new jazz-driven direction for the Austrian producer. Composed of finger snapping tracks seemingly harvested from the ’20s and reworked for a modern audience, Ballroom Stories combines classic melodies and steady beats, all realised on a slew of big band instruments topped with jazz-inspired vocals from Zeebee, Joy Malcolm and Brian Amos. The biggest standouts are the dub-ified numbers that freshen up an overworked genre. As well, the CD’s consistent mid-tempo BPM makes it a perfect transitional CD from the dinner table to the dance floor.
