Volapük

Polyglöt

BY James KeastPublished Aug 2, 2000

The French trio of cello, clarinet and drums (with some violin and others) will quite simply knock you on your ass. Full of intricate, inventive arrangements and writing, it's a carnival of sounds that will dizzy you with dazzling lights, swirling colours and a substantial sugar high. Through the darkness of the haunted house to the bling bling of the gaming tables, this is as entertaining a journey through "art" music as you're likely to find. Drawing on various classical influences and structures, Volapük has a keen sense of when to break the rules. There isn't much necessary, though - this band is cutting their own swath through to a new spot in the musical jungle.
