Ten in Texas

BY David McPhersonPublished Nov 1, 2005

This compilation by Icehouse Music showcases the fertile musical landscape that is the state of Texas. From rhythm & blues to country, folk and rock, the Lone Star State has always been a melting pot of some kick-ass music. Here, Texas artists handpicked ten contemporary musicians and recorded some of their classic creations. The disc opens with the down-home soul of Ruthie Foster giving Guy Clark’s homage to the region’s cuisine ("Texas Cookin”) a new lease on life. Other Texas vets covered include Kris Kristofferson through Joe Ely’s tender reworking of the classic "Sunday Morning Coming Down,” Billy Joe Shaver’s "Honky Tonk Heroes,” which is given gospel treatment by the powerful pipes of Carolyn Wonderland, and Willie Nelson recording a live version of "Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.” Overall, Ten in Texas is a great sampling of Texas’ finest musicians and songwriters past and present.
