Talkin Inside The Beat

BY Prasad BidayePublished Sep 1, 2000

This 11-track disc is a sampler of the best tracks and remixes to come out on Talkin' Loud over the past few years. The vibe is similar to the label's 21st Century Soul, from 1997, with its blend of futuristic, jazzy and world grooves. 4 Hero, Masters At Work and the members of Reprazent tend to dominate the track selection, although through the remixing lens of new interpreters. DJ Krust's "Re-Arrange" undergoes an abstract-jazz revision courtesy of the Cinematic Orchestra, with the latter's characteristic string-light breakdowns. Reprazent's "Watching Windows" gets a similar live treatment from MAW's Nu Yorican Soul band, delivering the original from a mid-tempo, atmospheric, breakbeat polish into an experimental salsa dimension. The track's Latin-groove workout is supplemented by the "Yoru-pean Drumz" remix of Eternal Sun's "6/8 Drumz." Hefner takes 4 Hero's "Planetaria" to a low-down, hip-hop swing, while Jazzanova give the cold electronic textures of "We Are Not of Others" a '80s fusion twist. United Future Organization's "The Planet Plan" flows nice amidst the compilation's mix, but there's no doubt that it would have been far more interesting to hear one of the band's more electro-friendly remixes appear instead.
