Saints’ Paradise

BY David LewisPublished Nov 1, 1999

Featuring six trombone shout bands from the United House of Prayer, this anthology epitomises the congregational call and response patterns that are the essence of gospel’s communal tradition. This boisterous brass ensemble music is intimately tribal, stirring up a dense musical soup within a cultural cauldron that ultimately transformed its primary ingredients into such distinctive forms as funk, gospel, soul, jazz and blues. Be that as it may, this is spirited music that makes bands like Madison’s Lively Stones, Happyland Band, Clouds of Heaven and Kings of Harmony instant treasure. You might never have dug the trombone before now, but these guys got the spirit and they deliver. Rock, church, rock!
