Heartworn Highways: Original Vintage Recordings fr

BY David McPhersonPublished May 1, 2006

Grab some whiskey and get ready to recall a time of the timeless turntable and some even more ageless tunes on this vintage recording that is getting some new life 30 years past its best before date. This CD chronicles the artists and music featured in the documentary Heartworn Highways, a film about the country outlaws who were churning out songs and turning the mainstream country music industry on its head in the late ’70s. As the liner notes state though: "this is not the soundtrack to Heartworn Highways.” Rather, the disc is an audio amigo to the movie, rather than rehashing the songs sung on film. The result is a roots and country rock lover’s ultimate document of some of the finest songwriters to pick up pen and guitar and go for broke. From the opening tracks by Guy Clark ("L.A. Freeway” and "That Old Time Feeling”) and choice selections from the late, great Townes Van Zandt ("Pancho and Lefty” and "Waitin’ Round to Die,”), to the songwriter’s songwriter Steve Young and a rising star in the making that was Rodney Crowell, this CD features 20 songs that you will play over and over again and each time find some new subtleties in these finely crafted creations.
