A Decade of Future Music

BY Marinko JarebPublished Nov 1, 2005

For the past ten years, San Francisco’s Om Records has been a trendsetter in house and down-tempo electronic music. Om changed things by concentrating on albums and compilations rather than twelve-inch records, and by injecting electronic music with soul and world music. Mark Farina’s popular Mushroom Jazz brought instrumental hip-hop to a wide variety of house music fans and DJs that may have otherwise slept on the genre. This three-disc collection brings together some of the classics that have made Om a label to watch, whether it be funky, jackin’ house or soulful hip-hop masterpieces. If you’ve been following house music all along, this release won’t mean much because you’ll have many of these tracks in your collection already. But if you’re new to the genre, A Decade of Future Music is a great place to start.
