Punk Goes Classic Rock

BY Nicole VilleneuvePublished Jun 21, 2010

Punk goes bust on Punk Goes Classic Rock. The latest in a longer than anyone thought line of the Fearless cover series features a current crop of pop punk-influenced alt-rock MySpace bands you've probably never heard of covering some legitimate classic rock (Kiss, the Rolling Stones) and some that fit by definition (Def Leppard), in the most derivative and one-dimensional manner possible. Pumping a ton of money and studio time into making these bands sound like big-ass, bonafide rock bands doesn't make the covers any more interesting, with only two tracks sounding like they weren't performed by the same group (Pierce the Veil's take on Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" and We the Kings doing .38 Special's "Caught Up In You"). Cover songs have a terrific novelty factor and when done with energy and personality, can be guilt-free fun. Aside from the same curiosity that all disasters pique, Punk Goes Classic Rock won't give you anything else.
