Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One are both established solo artists in their own right, and now the soul singer and the hip-hop producer are preparing to release a collaborative album as Tuxedo. In the meantime, they are celebrating the holidays with a cover of Paul McCartney's 1979 cornball classic "Wonderful Christmastime."
While the melodies and basic structure are preserved, this version transforms the sugary pop tune into a funkified, swaggering funk groove. The chorus sounds as a giddy and joyous as ever, and the sexy groove is well-suited to loitering by the punch bowl and then strutting out onto the dancefloor to embarrass yourself at the office Christmas party.
Tuxedo is out in March 3 on Stones Throw Records.
