Well, now that the nail-biting, heart-racing wait to find out if How to Destroy Angels is actually Trent Reznor's first post-NIN project (it is; did anyone think for a second that it wasn't him?) and a song, "A Drowning," has been made available to the public, it's time to find out a bit more about this project.
The band, which also include Reznor's wife Mariqueen Maandig in their ranks, took some time to answer some questions from fans on their Facebook page on Wednesday (May 5).
First of all, who is in the band? Reznor confirmed that apart from himself and Maandig, Atticus Ross, who has collaborated with Reznor before, is also in the group. And as far as guest appearances, looks like it might be Peter Christopherson of Coil, who had an early single that How to Destroy Angels named themselves after. Reznor confirmed that they "ran the name choice by him first and we've discussed him contributing to the upcoming material in one form or another."
As for recorded material and live shows, the band's debut EP will drop this summer and then "next up is a full LP (tent. early 2011) and then MAYBE some degree of touring," Reznor said on their Facebook page.
When asked how the new project is different than Nine Inch Nails, Reznor said that the EP "is a very early phase of this project," which the band weren't going to initially release to the public. However, they were so happy with their recorded material they decided to release it after all. Reznor admitted that it sounds more "NIN-ish" than he thinks it will as the band find their identity.
"To me, HTDA frees me from some of the constraints I've begun to feel (primarily emotionally) in NIN," said Reznor. "NIN is not dead and I am about to work on some material that I believe will be quite different than previous NIN very soon."
And Reznor also revealed a lot in his snappy reply to this rather intense question:
Is the writing just as collaborative as the music? Please, tell us - just how separate are we to consider NIN from How to Destroy Angels? Are you striving to make HDA have a musical identity of its own? With its own fan base? Own agenda? Own vision? Are you expecting (for lack of a better word) NIN fans to receive HDA well? To appreciate and respect HDA while still loving NIN?
To which Reznor replied, "Whoa... what??"
