Following their hybrid 2021 edition, organizers of the X Avant festival from Toronto's Music Gallery have detailed their 2022 event.

Running from October 12 to 15, X Avant XVII: LifeWorld features four nights of concerts, drag performances, parties, and art installations at the Music Gallery, located at 918 Bathurst Street.

Programmed by Artistic Director Sanjeet Takhar, LifeWorld will explore remix culture both locally and globally, holding collaboration paramount as it dives into a variety of arts cultures, both global and local.

The festival begins with an evening co-presented with Québec Musiques Paralèlles, headlined by a collaboration between English guitarist Andy Moor of experimental punks the Ex, and Netherlands-based, Cyprus-born composer Yannis Kyriakides blending classic Rebetiko songs with explorative post-punk. Moor and Kyriakides will be joined by the renowned Quatuor Bozzini for a special collaboration on the ensemble work "Orbital," while the neo-soul sounds of M.I.Blue will open the evening.

X Avant's second night will feature a multi-room exploration of diasporic Filipin* creation through sound, visuals, performance and food, curated by Pantayo player (and Exclaim! magazine layout editor) Kat Estacio. namamahay (to dwell) features works by April Aliermo (Phèdre, Hooded Fang), Patrick Cruz, Kristina Guison, Victoria Fard-Young, Krēme Inakuchi, Megan Arnold, and Standpartners.

Night three belongs to South Asian remix queen Bijuriya, the alter ego of vocalist-cellist and composer Gabriel Dharmoo, who will celebrate Brownness through expressions including drag performance, original songs and experimental sound design.

The fourth and final night sees X Avant team with Lula Lounge and Labyrinth Ontario to transform the Music Gallery into a multi-level family house party, styled by interior designers to resemble an "outdoor barbecue at grandma's house." It's here where you'll be able to witness JER, NPNP Trio, Labyrinth Ontario, Halpo, Rick Sacks, Ciel, olasconola, Victoria Fard, and April Aliermo all under one roof.

Full festival passes for X Avant XVII: LifeWorld are now available for purchase, while tickets to individual evenings are also available. Further artist and festival information can be found via the Music Gallery's official website.
