Tony Furtado

Bare Bones

BY David McPhersonPublished Jun 1, 2005

Guitar-slinger and slide-guitar whiz Tony Furtado is a road warrior. He plays an average of 300 live dates a year, so it’s only appropriate that this accomplished acoustic picker document how he spends most of his days and nights with this live disc. Bare Bones is a follow up to 2004’s These Chains, and it collects the best of Furtado for those unable to catch one of his 300 plus shows; it’s also a substitute for his legion of fans waiting for his return to their neck of the woods. The disc collects mainly Furtado originals — a mixture of roots songs ("These Chains”) and instrumental explorations ("St. John’s Fire/Bolinas”) that showcase Furtado’s famed pickin’. Covers include a spirited acoustic reworking of Tom Petty’s "Running Down a Dream,” and a nod to the Fab Four with "I Will.” Songs for the album were collected over the course of the summer of 2004, mostly from the Crystal Bay Club in Tahoe, Brick by Brick in San Diego, and Soho in Santa Barbara. This is an acoustic lover’s reverie as Furtado switches from acoustic to slide guitar to his "Earl Scruggs” model banjo — an instrument he first learned to play as a 12-year-old. Bare Bones is something his fans have been clamouring for ages to hear and they won’t be disappointed.
