An ugly lawsuit over the management of the late Tom Petty's estate between his two daughters and widow has been settled.
While details of the settlement are unclear, both parties in the $5 million USD lawsuit have reached a "settlement agreement," according to legal documents obtained by Rolling Stone. Petty's widow and his two daughters, as well as the late musician's longtime manager Anthony Dimitriades, came to the agreement on December 10.
As previously reported, Petty's widow Dana Petty was sued this spring by the late singer's daughters, Adria Petty and Annakim Violette (formerly Petty), for allegedly mismanaging the estate and costing the company over $5 million USD.
The dispute reportedly affected the release of a posthumous greatest-hits compilation, in addition to a 25th anniversary edition of Petty's 1994 solo LP Wildflowers.
In a previous statement, Alex Weingarten, a lawyer for Petty's daughters, told Rolling Stone: "Tom Petty wanted his music and his legacy to be controlled equally by his daughters, Adria and Annakim, and his wife, Dana. Dana has refused Tom's express wishes and insisted instead upon misappropriating Tom's life's work for her own selfish interests. After countless efforts to resolve this matter amicably and out of court, we could no longer stand idly by and watch Dana disrespect Tom's wishes, his music and his legacy."
Meanwhile, the lawyer for Dana Petty stated, "This misguided and meritless lawsuit sadly demonstrates exactly why Tom Petty designated his wife to be the sole trustee with authority to manage his estate. Dana will not allow destructive nonsense like this to distract her from protecting her husband's legacy."
