The End Is Begun

BY Laura Wiebe TaylorPublished Oct 24, 2007

Three’s latest album is addictive and slightly annoying all at once. A fusion of ’70s and contemporary progressive rock, The End Is Begun is a demonstration of expert musicianship and compositional complexity. The record avoids crossing the line into self-indulgent displays of technical prowess but that doesn’t mean its meanderings always make immediate sense. While "Serpents in Disguise” is downright catchy, Three aren’t generous with memorable hooks — they serve more as markers in an extended journey. Despite ventures into heavier territory and more often mellow ground, alert but laidback contemplation is the dominant mood on the album. And that’s the kind of attention The End Is Begun demands — relaxed but focused listening.
