To tide us over while we indulge in the holiday spirit gorging on stuffing and egg nog, we asked a bunch of musicians to tell us their thoughts on 2008. Some of them replied with lists of their favourite music, some told us their fondest memories and some came up with much more creative ways to commemorate this past year.
Members of Montreal/Halifax's Contrived joined forces to give their mishmash versions of year-end favourites, which reveal just how in sync their tastes are:
Jon Samuel
Black Mountian in London, England. May 2008: They played one of the coolest clubs in London Town. They killed it
Wolf Parade at Terminal 5 in New York City, August 2008: "I'll Believe in Anything" was mind melting. The vibe, the heaviness was a mind melting overload. Awesome band to watch play off each other.
Michael Bigelow
Eric Copeland Alien On a Garbage Dump: Dense, heavy and humorous all at the same time. A really fun listen.
Black Mountain In the Future: I'm sure I am not the only one in the band that loves this record. One of the best bands I have seen in a long, long time. These guys' fucking rule.
Constantines Kensington Heights: "I had that dream, brother, the one about you, brother," done deal right there. Again, these guys fucking rule.
Madvillain Madvillainy 2: Not as awesome as the first one but Madlib's production gets me every time. Def worth a good listen. MF Doom is hard to top.
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Lie Down in the Light: Oldham does it again!
Brian Borcherdt Coyotes: This is a perfect record in many ways. These songs scare me a little. And the artwork is amazing.
Wolf Parade At Mount Zoomer: A force to be reckoned with.
The Sea and Cake Car Alarm: Their best album since Oui!
Do Make Say Think: Anything! I don't think these guys put out a record this year but still. One of my favorite bands, for sure. Best bass player, ever.
Mike M.
